Dear Reader,
I could tell you about my world-travelling characters who set off to find the lives they need, but as a reader myself I just think that tells nothing of the task ahead of you. So firstly, you’ll never read the direct thoughts of my main character, Peter. You will have to make of his actions and words what you will, just as the friends and family around him must. I enjoy dialogue so you’ll watch my characters talk, laugh and cry as they spend their lives uncovering the sad truths of Peter’s existence throughout the series. This first instalment is the beginning of a will they/won’t they love story based on people of differing sexualities. There won’t always be happy endings, but I do promise the gradual uncovering of each character’s jewel in their jar of glass beads. Enjoy.

The Jewel in the Jar by Victoria Whithear surrounds a pair of young adults who have grown up together, despite being drawn in different directions at the end of school. They are brought back together with a plan to travel the world, taking their portable careers with them. Peter and Juliet have been friends since their early teens, and despite having an apparent romantic attraction to one another, have managed to put their friendship first. However, we can see early on that this will be no easy task.Despite not much “tell” in the description of The Jewel in the Jar by Victoria Whithear, the book is really good. It brings to mind some Hemingway-esq qualities about being young, in the quarter-life, and having difficulties in love, all against the backdrop of Europe.
The characters are believable, and I found myself relating them in a number of ways. While you can sort of tell where all of this is going, Victoria keeps you guessing as to when, where, and if what you expect is going to happen. There’s no heads up as to their next destination, but you go along for the ride anticipating the best and you’re rewarded with fantastic descriptions and a storyline that you find hard to separate from.
The only problem I had was that at some points the author changes locations without a great deal of notice. I suspect this may have been a formatting issue on the part of Amazon, but in all honesty it doesn’t take away from the story, and the author does a great job bringing you back to center with dialogue and setting description.
I definitely recommend reading The Jewel in the Jar by Victoria Whithear. It’s slated to be first in a series so there will be more to come once you’re hooked.
