What I liked about this one was all the character development: it is clear that Kilik and his friends have all grown from their previous adventures and it shows in their thoughts and dialogue.In fact there is much to like about this one with plenty going on in true Livingston style. The city of Emerald is suffering from disease, drought and that all powerful enemy: fear. The entire areas ecology system has been attacked with the water supply, plants and wildlife all poisoned.
Kilik, Shiana and Hiro investigate and attempt to tend to the mistrusting and fearful population. To make matters worse hordes of un-dead now stalk the land. Falling Sun could not be a more apt title, as this one is very dark!
With mages, warriors, gods, goddesses, healing potions, monsters, spirits, the sky king and sky hawks this is packed with incident and adventure. Once again the hero Kilik has his hands full.
Livingston explores and develops the excellent idea of harnessing magic from the elements such as copper, gold and diamonds. The raw energy of the planet is harnessed and exploited for magical purposes. This is a very ecologically and environmentally aware story, highlighting the importance of looking after everything your world has to offer.
The breakneck action and quick witted humour are also again present. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and the banter in particular.
This is also about responsibility. Shiana's healing abilities, Kilik's leadership and Hiro's talents for magic are all much in demand and key to helping a people who are looking for help and guidance. Here the trio are all grown up and tasked with protecting the innocent as well as defeating powerful foes be they in the physical or spiritual realm.
There are new characters (whose identities I will not reveal here) alongside the familiar ones making things more interesting as it is unclear who is a friend and who is not to be trusted.
There are battles where Kilik must utilize all of his tactical nous and ingenuity to overcome the Vires army lead by the dastardly General Dyne. Everyone must set aside personal differences if they are to succeed.
With plenty of fighting, misdirection, smoke and mirrors and the continuing battle for Kilik's soul this is an entertaining and wholly satisfying conclusion to Livingston's epic saga. I am sure there is a lot more to come from this exciting and creative author.
